Burnsville, MN offers year round activities and special events for the whole family. Since Burnsville is considered the “Gateway to Minneapolis and St. Paul, you not only have the special events in the town of Burnsville, but the ones in the twin cities, as well. Also be sure to check out the Burnsville Center, which is the site of lots of ongoing events such as arts & crafts shows, home shows, special exhibits, etc. One of the largest events in the area is the Minnesota State Fair held at the fairgrounds on Snelling Avenue North in St. Paul. The fair usually runs for twelve days beginning in late August through Labor Day, and features free stage entertainment, an amateur talent contest, livestock, creative arts, school projects, rides, lots of great food and much more. Also, the Minnesota State Fairgrounds is the site of numerous other special events throughout the year, such as the Minnesota Horse Expo and the Antique Spectacular Show and Flea Market. Below is a list of some of the other special events found in the Burnsville area.

The Minnesota Scottish Fair & Highland Games – usually held in July at the Dakota County Fairgrounds (just south of nearby Farmington.)

Minnesota Zoo/Family Farm Festival – This festival is good old-fashioned fun at the zoo with face painting, music, blacksmith demonstrations, spinning and weaving demonstrations, antique tractor displays and other kids’ activities, such as a “mini-tractor pull contest” for kids ages 4 – 11. Children can take a ride on the farm tram, watch a cow milking demonstration and enjoy fresh corn on the cob. This event is usually held in July. Watch for other special events held at the Minnesota Zoo, as well, ongoing throughout the year.

The Minnesota Renaissance Festival – located approximately 35 miles south of Burnsville and usually held mid-August through September. The legend of the 16th century comes to life as kings and queens reign supreme and costumed characters represent village life. Twelve stages are constantly filled with music and comedy at this fair, and over 275 artisans sell and demonstrate their crafts. Open rain or shine – great fun for the whole family.

Art Crawl at the Minnesota River School of Fine Art – held in August

Art and All That Jazz Concert – held at the Nicolette Commons Park in Burnsville

Annual Fire Muster Celebration in Burnsville – usually held in September. This event has been a tradition for 25 years and includes a parade, a golf tournament, live music, rides, fireworks and more.
